Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a process whereby information about the environmental effects and impacts of certain projects/types of development is collected, assessed and taken into account before a planning decision is made. The outcome of an EIA is an Environmental Statement (ES). The ES contains such relevant environmental information that is reasonably required to assess the environmental impact of a proposed project. There is a statutory requirement for an EIA of a wide range of major development projects that include ports, harbours, canals and airports.
