The UKQAA represents the main coal fired power station operators promoting the use of Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA), Furnace Bottom Ash (FBA), etc.

PFA and FBA are by-products of coal-fired power stations. Both are valuable resources in their own right. They are safe and versatile construction materials, which can be used in a variety of applications. These applications include PFA as a cement replacement in concrete, in grout for filling underground caverns, pipes and mine workings, in land stabilisation, in road/airfield pavement construction/maintenance and as a load-bearing fill. PFA and FBA are also used in concrete block/brick and lightweight aggregate manufacture.

There are many types of PFA
* PFA - Classified ash – as used in concrete. PFA is graded to remove coarser particles. “Dry PFA” is supplied into block manufacture, grouts, concrete products etc
* PFA - Conditioned ash – used for block manufacture, grout and fill
* PFA - Lagoon ash – used for grout, fill and landscaping
* FBA – used in block manufacture, making them fire/rot resistant
* Cenospheres – used as a filler in paints, plastics etc
