Aims:

The aim of this course is to survey the range of tested and innovative technologies available for contaminated land remediation; to examine their practical implementation and to explore how remedial decisions are reached on the basis of the financial and environmental consequences of particular options.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this course, a student will be able to demonstrate:
•an appropriate scientific understanding of the techniques that may be used to undertake contaminated land remediation ;
•a critical understanding of the engineered implementation of remediation systems;
•and a critical understanding of how informed professional decisions are made about choice of remediation methods.

Indicative Content:

The lecture programme will survey the wide range of remedial technologies available to the environmental engineer. The techniques examined will, to a large extent reflect, the prevailing research interests of the teaching staff. The major thrust of the taught programme will be a rigorous review of underpinning science and engineering practice. Indicative material includes solidification technology; in situ and ex situ soil washing; surfactant facilitated desorption of soil contaminants; bio-augmented processes; natural attenuation.

Main Learning and Teaching Activities:

Lectures will be used to introduce the students to remediation techniques. Seminars will be used to consider the practical applications of this knowledge in the context of environmental pollution case studies. Guest lecturers from industry and regulatory authorities will provide an insight to how remediation decision making is made. It is anticipated that the guest lecturers will provide material for the group report exercise.
