OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this course are to introduce participants to the fundamentals of contract law and the range of contracts used in the construction industry, and to provide an overview of the available standard contract forms (in particular the ICE Conditions of Contract 7th Edition and the ICE New Engineering Contract).
PROGRAMME
The course will initially examine some of the basic aspects of contract law but without reference to cases. A number of problems will be proposed for discussion. Participants will then be introduced to the range of contracts available together with the meaning of the term “contract risk”. The standard contract forms available including ICE Conditions of Contract (7th Edition), ICE New Engineering Contract, JCT Forms, IChemE Forms and FIDIC will be reviewed in the context of contract types and contract risk.

At the end of the course participants will be able to:
*Identify the essential features of a valid contract.
*Understand the range of types of contracts applicable to the construction industry and the types of projects to which they are best applied.
*Be aware of the standard contract forms in use in the construction industry.
*Choose which standard contract form is most appropriate for which type of contract.
