This course sets out to give an overview of the types of masonry arch structures encountered by bridge engineers and inspectors on a regular basis across the UK and Ireland highways infrastructure network. It will enable the delegate to think of what the cause of any defect may be, initiate a detailed inspection and once obtaining test results, order the required maintenance. All relevant bridge standards will be shown.

Learning Outcomes:

Each delegate will learn how to identify different defects in both stone and brickwork arches, discover the variety of testing methods which establish the cause of the most common defects. The delegate will discover what relevant information is required in order to carry out a modified MEXI calculation.

Aims & Objectives:

On completion of this course each delegate will be able to examine and identify common defects associated with masonry arches report back and discuss the findings of a defect in a professional manner with other members of the structures team. The course will increase confidence to enable the delegate to give clear instruction to craftsmen to carry out a repair and initiate future maintenance procedures.

Course Outline:

    •
    • Including a group exercise
  • Different types and designs of masonry arch
    • Maintenance
    • Common issues

Mode of Delivery:

The course is delivered as a power point presentation with regular discussion and some interactive exercise. There will be question and answer intended to involve the whole group with discussion about nearby structures and individual experiences. Models will be used to increase awareness of structural loading and how it affects the structure.

Benefits Perceived by Participants:
